America
America is described is as a place that is cultured and opinionated about others. Two examples from the poem would be, “Although she feeds me bread of bitterness,’ and ‘Stealing my breath of life….this cultured hell that tests my youth.” Words like stealing, tests, and cultured hell all show that parts of America are negative and are giving the speaker some troubles. America is also described as a place that offers a lot to an individual and somewhere that can bring a lot of happiness into a person’s life. Examples of this would be, “Her vigor flows like tides into my blood,’ and ‘Darkly I gaze into the days ahead, And see her might and granite wonders there.” The words give off a positive connotation so that you feel the strength given to the speaker and they are short in order for them to get straight to the point.
